Yoga Sutra 2.33
When disturbed by negative or destructive thoughts, you should consciously cultivate the opposite positive thoughts.
The Technique:
Known as pratipaksha bhavana (cultivating the opposite), this practice stops negative mental loops not by fighting them, but by replacing them with uplifting virtues. For example, if anger or resentment arises, you deliberately foster thoughts of compassion, patience, or love.
Habit Formation:
Repeatedly shifting your focus rewires automatic mental reactivity into constructive patterns over time.
We all get stuck in negative thought patterns. Stop yourself from spiraling by bringing your hands to your heart. This is where we move to being in the world, but not caught up in it. Become aware of the negative thoughts and consciously replace them with the opposite, something positive. Complainig about something? Find something to be grateful for... Let me know how it goes.
“You must purge yourself before finding faults in others.
When you see a mistake in somebody else, try to find if you are making the same mistake.
This is the way to take judgment and to turn it into improvement.
Do not look at others' bodies with envy or with superiority.
All people are born with different constitutions.
Never compare with others.
Each one's capacities are a function of his or her internal strength.
Know your capacities and continually improve upon them.”
